About this property

Welcome to Gertrude Hotel

Gertrude Hotel, located on Ģertrūdes iela 70 in the vibrant Latgales priekšpilsēta district of Riga, Latvia, offers a unique blend of vintage charm and practical comfort. With a solid 4.1-star rating, the hotel appeals to travelers seeking an affordable yet memorable stay near the leafy Ziedoņdārzs Park and the culturally rich Zuzeum art center. Guests appreciate the hotel’s proximity to indie galleries and quirky local shops that reflect Riga’s evolving art scene.

The hotel’s lobby exudes an old-school elegance reminiscent of a vintage casino, setting it apart from more modern establishments. This atmosphere resonates well with those who enjoy a touch of nostalgia, though some may note that certain room details, such as the dated upholstery and curtains, suggest the hotel carries a history that could benefit from updates. Despite this, the spacious rooms do offer a practical and functional experience, equipped with amenities like air conditioning, detatchable shower heads, and wall-mounted TVs. Cleanliness is generally praised, though there have been mentions of unpleasant hallway odors that slightly affect the overall ambiance.

Gertrude Hotel’s self-check-in system is highlighted as a brisk and efficient process, ideal for guests comfortable with minimal staff interaction. Indeed, this manless hotel model caters well to independent travelers who prefer a streamlined experience without a front desk always in sight. However, for those who value personal contact, assistance is readily available via a dedicated phone line.

Breakfast at Gertrude Hotel is modest but sufficient, featuring a limited selection that covers the essentials. While the omelette options and variety may not be expansive, they provide a solid start for most guests before exploring the hip, artistic neighborhood outside. The tap water’s unique taste might catch some off guard but aligns with Latvia’s reputation for clean water sources.

Overall, Gertrude Hotel offers great value for money. It is a place where the charm of the past gently meets contemporary needs, creating an experience that is both straightforward and quietly satisfying. For travelers eager to dive into Riga’s artsy culture and enjoy the convenience of a well-situated, clean, and functional hotel, Gertrude stands as a worthy choice. Its quirks and occasional imperfections lend it character, while the efficient systems and spacious accommodations deliver comfort without fuss.

Checking in at Rixwell Gertrude felt a bit like playing poker - all about knowing the rules and reading the instructions. Once you get them, the self check-in is smooth and quick, almost like getting dealt pocket aces when you expect a bluff. The lobby has that old-school charm, more vintage casino than modern poker room - elegant, but doesn’t exactly match the tech-forward setup of room keys stored in safeboxes. Still, it works. Communication through WhatsApp is fast and efficient - their customer service clearly knows how to play their cards right. I initially drew a bad hand with a room that had no electricity, but the staff reshuffled quickly - I got a new room code within minutes. That kind of response time is like hitting your flush on the river. The standard room might be showing its age, but for under €50 a night, it’s a value bet that pays off. You get all the essentials - TV, air conditioning, safe, kettle - the kind of tools that keep you comfortably in the game. Downstairs, the common kitchen and lounge area (-1 floor) is the real wildcard - spotless, fully equipped, and a perfect spot for those who like to stretch their travel budget without folding on comfort. The location? Depends what you’re playing for. For me, being within a 25-30 minute walk from the bus station, Voodoo Casino, and Daugava Stadium made it a winning setup. All in all, Rixwell Gertrude Hotel isn’t a royal flush - but for the price, it’s a strong, well-played hand.

The hotel is very beautiful and clean, and you hardly need anything from outside. There are vending machines with light snacks and hot and cold drinks. The rooms are spacious and clean; however, the smell in the hallways is very bad.

Fantastic value for money. I had a really great 7 night stay here. if your like me and feel anxious about the hotels you stay in before you get there then relax. The room was a fair size with a lovely modern bathroom (hair dryer, bath, soup desenser sink and shower, the water pressure was good and the shower head is detatchable and plenty of towels) Air condition worked great and TV on wall served its purpose with some english speaking channels for entertainment. Well stocked minibar fridge with reasonable prices unlike some hotels, I thought I was being clever and bought what I needed in the way of snacks and drinks from the Rimi supermarket a few doors down from the hotel (open 8-22) but it would have been cheaper for some things like the nuts from the minibar, you live and learn hay? The staff were fantastic and late check in is no problem as reception is staffed 24 hrs. I see some reviews have slated the breakfast, snobs I thinks, I found so much choice I was overwhelmed and as it was help yourself from 7 - 11am I always made sure I was full until evening meal. The immediate surrounding area you can find Avotuezitis, just walk left out of the Hotel then right and you will see it on your right, loads of space, (outdoor courtyard too) great IPA on tap and reasonably priced food menu, (burgers, pasta, wraps and toasties starting from around 5 euros. If you travel a bit futher on the left you will find 3 men and a boat on the corner, this felt a bit of a locals bar and out of towners are not priorty, at the bar was a lady with a great big savage looking dog that you had to brush against to gain entry and it looked like it was going to kill me but I braved it but was left with wet sleeves after it slobered all over me, no sense of concern from dog owner or bar staff, I did go to order a couple of things from the menu but the first I was advised it takes over 30 mins and was discouraged so went for a burger and was told they had no burgers so ended up with chips and what they call crusty chickin fingers but is in-fact chickin strips in batter and actually was very nice and with the chips made a very good meal even though it was off the snack menu. If you want a real good meal for under 3 euros then hands down go to Haoli Bistro, its on the same street as the other 2 places but in the other direction, its a bit rough and ready but I paid 2.45 euro for a plate of noodles and spicy chickin and it was to die for, its a bit leftfield but trust me, give it a go but do not take your date out to this place. Getting to the center or old town in easy, its either a nice 25min walk or get bus/tram, its so easy and cheap, i paid 10 euro for a 5 day pass that gives unlimited travel within Riga, or 1.5 euro for 90 mins or 5 euro for unlimited for 24 hrs. Its all brilliant, I love it here and will be back... thats all folks

TL;DR normal hotel with small breakfast selection and not very far from the centre. Receptionist spoke English and got us sorted quickly to our rooms. Very spacious rooms with TV, cardboard, hot drinks station, desk and an alright bathroom. Pressured shower, tap water tastes funny for an Englishmen but Latvia has really clean water so it's fine. Breakfast was okay, not much selection but was sufficient but wasn't massive, coffee was also very limited (white coffee rather than a latte)

I recently stayed at the Rixwell Gertrude Hotel, which is apparently a 4-star property—well, maybe it was in 1950. The staff, I must say, were very good and probably the best part of the stay. But the room? It felt like a time capsule from decades ago. The bed's upholstery was so old it could have been an antique, and the curtains looked like they’d seen more sunsets than I have. The air conditioning was about as noisy as a tractor, so that was fun trying to sleep through. And the Wi-Fi? Let’s just say it was more of a suggestion than a service. But hey, the breakfast was decent, and the hotel is in a lovely location, so at least I had something to look forward to in the morning. If you’re into vintage charm, this place might be for you, but I’d recommend bringing earplugs and your own hotspot. Just in case you didn’t get it - There is no problem at all with the room, I had a comfortable stay but there’s some things you can’t ignore! They also had a mini bar In The room!

Noisy AC, despite being turned OFF. Other than that, room and staff was good. Location is alright. Breakfast buffet was nice but I have to agree with other reviews regarding the "Omelette", which is kinda weird. Overall, I'd say it's worth the money

For the money, I really have to be very content. The room is small but comfortable enough. The breakfast is fine. The location is good. No problems.

It is a man less hotel meaning there are no receptionist or hotel staff at the location if you don't like to interact with people or staff you can choose this hotel but if you like staff or receptionist to be present every time so don't. But there is a number yoh can contact on to get about everything like card door house keeping etc etc and hotel have a full blown kitchen so you can pretty much cook anything and everything there and they also have a lounge and piano in it
